Wolverines get victory over Warriors
Aliso gets big win 18-0 to stay in the race for playoffs and league title. In a must win game for both teams to stay in the playoff race Aliso and Woodbridge both 0-1-0 in league came into Thursdays night game knowing with out a victory they would more that likely not make the playoffs this year. That being said the Wolverines defense played liked it had earlier in the year and stepped up to shut down the Warriors and keep them out of the end-zone all night to gain a much needed shut out. With defensive pressure Aliso had not displayed the last two weeks, the Woodbridge offense was kept off balance and unable to put a real drive together all night long. Defensive leaders on the night included Robert Mealin who had several big plays and added to his league leading tackles made which stands at 69 solo tackles, the entire defense including Zack Bosco, Pete Swell, Tyler Zanolli, Nick Young, Dez Ralston, Alex Yoon and Cory Seltenreich stepped up to make a statement that defense wins games and we are here to prove it. The Wolverine defense currently has given up the fewest point (106) in the Sea View League and looks to continue on that. Offensively the Wolverines had flashes of greatness on touchdown resulting plays only to have them called back due to penalties, which have haunted Aliso all season long. Greg Azaula continued to be the force of the Wolverine offense with two touchdown runs one for 5-yards and the second for 6-yards, Azuala had 11 rushes on the night for 62-yards before leaving the game with a banged up knee in the fourth quarter. Zanolli also contributed on the ground with 9 rushes for 46-yards. Passing wise Zanolli was 3 of 9 for 62-yards and K.C. Clarke was 2 for 2 for 43-yards. Aaron Long lead all receivers with 4 catches for 86-yards and Brian Pelichowski also added to his season total of 368 receiving yards. Pelichowski and Long currently rank second and third in the Seaview Leauge for receiving yards. Maybe the most impressive play of the night came on special teams when Eric Carr kick a season long 50-yard field goal in the second quarter. This weeks Homecoming game finds the Wolverines one game behind the Sailors of Newport Harbor and with a win the Wolverines control their own fate in making the playoff and stay in contention for a league title. |
Aliso Niguel shuts down Woodbridge By TIM BURT - The Orange County Register, Friday, October 21, 2005
IRVINE – Aliso Niguel got back on track Thursday night in a Sea View League football game against Woodbridge. But the Wolverines weren't celebrating too much after defeating the Warriors, 18-0, at Irvine High. The Wolverines (5-2, 1-1) were shut out by the Warriors (0-7, 0-2) in the second half. Aliso Niguel was coming off an opening 38-10 league loss to Laguna Hills last week. "I don't think we bounced back well, but we bounced back," Aliso Niguel Coach Jeff Veeder said. "It's nice to get back in the win column; I just don't think we executed very well tonight. "We still weren't sharp and if we're going to be able to compete against the top tier teams in this league, we got to be able to execute a lot better than we did tonight." Aliso Niguel had three fumbles and lost the ball twice. It was also penalized nine times for 70 yards. Aliso Niguel got an early break when the ball was snapped over the Woodbridge punter. The Wolverines recovered on the Woodbridge 30-yard line. Nine plays later, Greg Azaula scored from 5 yards out. Azaula also ran in for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0. Aliso Niguel then moved ahead, 11-0, on a 50-yard field goal by Eric Carr early in the second quarter. "He's a weapon. It's nice, and that's his range. He could have hit that from 55 or 56," Veeder said. The Wolverines moved out to an 18-0 lead when Azaula scored from 6 yards out with 2:07 left in the second quarter. Woodbridge was led by junior Byron Williams, who rushed for 98 yards on 24 carries. But Woodbridge, which scored 14 points in its league opener last week against Newport Harbor, sputtered for the most part offensively. The Warriors generated just 44 yards passing. "The defense played very well in the second half; they shut them out," Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said. "They (the defense) gave us a bunch of opportunities." Aliso defeated in league opener
Laguna Hills tops Aliso. The league opener for both Aliso and Laguna Hills looked to be a battle of teams that the week prior were teams going in different directions. Laguna Hills had gained its first victory of the season and Aliso lost for the first time this season. With both Team's looking to get win number one in league the Wolverines came out flat and played catch up all night long, with both teams heading into different leagues next year this was to be the end of a long time rivalry for both teams, Laguna seemed to use that as motivation all night making big play s to keep Aliso at bay and off the score board most of the night. Laguna Hills came into the game ready to play and took it to the Wolverines right away scoring on their first drive and again on defense the next series to jump to a 14-0 lead and never looked back. In what was not the normal defensive effort by the Wolverines the Hawks took full advantage and continued to put points on the board all night long to shock the home team and everyone in the Wolverine Den. Offensively the Wolverines had a 79-yard touchdown pass from Clarke to Pelichowski for the loan Aliso touchdown of the night and scoring was capped off by Eric Carr's 27-yard fieldgoal . Rushing leader was Greg Azaula with 10 carries for 79 yards receiving leader Brian Pelichowski had 6 receptions for 112-yards and K.C. Clarke threw for 160-yards on 9 completions. Aliso (4-2-0 / 0-1-0) looks to rebound on the road vs Woodbridge Thursday October 20 th at Irvine High School.

Wolverines come up short against Dolphins
Aliso falls to Dana Hills In what was sure to be a mini civil war pitting friend against friend and neighbor against neighbor was just that with both teams trading blows causing both teams to see casualties with players having to leave the game if not for the remained of the game for a few series. From the start both teams looked to control the ball and establish a ground game to do so. Aliso took the opening kick and right away went to the run chewing up eight minutes of the first period. After failing to put any points on the board, the Wolverines turned the ball over to Dana Hills who in turn also drove down the field running out the remainder of the clock in the first quarter but also failing to score. The second quarter is where both team found the end zone with the Wolverines striking first on an 85 yard touchdown pass down the left sideline from Tyler Zanolli to Aaron Long for the longest completion of the year to gain a 7-0 advantage. The Dolphins also put a touchdown on the board followed by a field goal before half to go to the locker room with a 10-7 lead. The third quarter was more of the same for the Dolphins offense scoring twice to extend their lead to 24-7. The fourth quarter is were the fire works began for the Wolverines Greg Azaula once again had a strong performance rushing the ball and after he went 23 yards for Aliso’s second touchdown of the night the Wolverines were within 14 points. With only a few minutes remaining in the game the Aliso defense stood up and did what they do best, create turnovers. After a big hit on the quarterback, Alex Yoon swooped up the loose ball and sprinted 44 yards to the end-zone and pulled the Wolverines to with in 3 points with a 24-21 score. The Wolverines lined up for the on side kick to attempt to pull off the miracle come back. The kick bounced around and seemingly touched three Wolverines who had an opportunity to come up with it. When the officials unpiled the mound of players Dana Hills had recovered the ball and ran out the clock for the victory in this years battle for bragging rights of the neighborhood. Aliso opens league play this week against another old friend in Laguna Hills; this to will be a battle of old league rivals. With both team going to new leagues next year both teams are looking to go out winners. |
Dana Hills survives scare
Schwartz caps a big game by recovering an onside kick to end Aliso Niguel's rally. By DAN ALBANO - The Orange County Register - Saturday, October 8, 2005
DANA POINT – Those who left Dana Hills' stadium before the end of Friday night's football game missed the scare Aliso Niguel put into one of the county's fastest-improving teams. Aliso Niguel scored 14 points in the final two minutes but Dana Hills' Grant Schwartz recovered a late onside kick as the Dolphins held on for a 24-21 nonleague victory against the previously undefeated Wolverines. Dana Hills (4-1) opens South Coast League play next week at top-ranked Mission Viejo, which had coaches in the stands here Friday. Schwartz was again the Dolphins playmaker. The senior's recovery of the onside kick might have been his biggest play because the kick passed 10 yards and then bounced off a Dana Hills player. "I think so," Dana Hills coach Armando Gonzalez said. "It was a little disappointing at the end but we'll take that victory." Dana Hills led, 24-7, and had possession late in the fourth period. Schwartz, who played through an ankle injury, wasn't at quarterback when Alex Yoon recorded a sack and forced a fumble the Wolverines recovered at the Dolphins 18. After a 5-yard penalty against Aliso Niguel (4-1), Greg Azaula scored on a 23-yard run with two minutes left as Aliso Niguel cut the deficit to 24-14. Aliso Niguel attempted an onside kick but Dana Hills made the recovery. But three plays later, Yoon recovered another fumble and returned it 44 yards for a score with 1:17 left. The extra point made it a 24-21 ballgame. "We had a chance," Aliso Niguel coach Jeff Veeder said. "The difference in the game was Grant Schwartz." Schwartz was at his best late in the first half, throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass with four seconds left to Ricky Carroll. The pass capped a 74-yard scoring drive in the final 1:30 of the second quarter and answered an 81-yard touchdown pass from Aliso Niguel quarterback Tyler Zanoli to Aaron Long. Aliso Niguel's score gave the Wolverines a short-lived 7-3 lead. Schwartz rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries and also passed for 146 yards and a score. "We had their receivers covered," Veeder said, "but he (Schwartz) has the ability to scramble around and stay alive." Dana Hills is one of county teams close to cracking the top-10 rankings and Gonzalez thought his team made a statement Friday. "We controlled the football," he said. "We gave them one score in the second quarter and that was it. Our defense played pretty well. ... We're 4-1 and they're (Aliso Niguel) a good football team." Dana Hills had a 17-play, 8:01 scoring drive in the first half. Connor St. Clair capped the drive with a 25-yard field goal that gave the Dolphins a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. Aliso air-attack bombs Trabuco Hills - Friday, September 30, 2005
Wolverines win tight game 33-24 and remain undefeated 4-0-0. With an offense that relied heavily on the running game for most of the season up to this point, the Wolverines showed up Friday night with a game plan to mix up the run and pass to control the clock and keep the ball away from the Mustang offense and the county's leading rusher. Aaron Long, Brian Pelichowski and Joe Gilbuena put the passing attack, that was under wraps for most of the season, on display with several highlight catches. Most of the passes were a combination of Zanolli's scrambling ability and his sense to remain calm and find the open receiver. The awaking of the air-attack for Aliso took some pressure off of the ground game that struggled in the first half with heavy pressure by the Mustang defensive front and linebackers. The scoring began for the Wolverines when on a fake punt, Aaron Long scampered 32-yards to the Mustang 9-yard line, one play later Greg Azaula sprinted the 9-yards to score the first touchdown of the night and a 7-0 lead after Eric Carr's PAT. The Mustangs came back to start the 2nd Qtr with a 41-yard field goal making the score 7-3.
Taking their next position on their own 20-yardline, Aliso drove 80-yards capped off with a Zanolli to Long 14-yard TD pass and a 13-3 advantage after a fake PAT attempt failed. Trabuco Hills scored on the next position to draw within 3 points trailing 13-10. Back came the Wolverines with what was a drive that Zanolli put his team on his shoulders and willed them into the end zone on a 42-yard pass to Pelichowski and a 20-10 halftime lead. Trabuco Hills scored the only points in the 3rd Quarter and trailed 20-17 going into the final quarter. It was time for Zanolli and Pelichowski to hook up again and they did on a 26-yard pass for a 27-17 lead. Later in the quarter just when the Mustangs looked about done they scored on a 54-yard pass for a touchdown pulling to within 3 points again. 27-24. With no choice but to score to ice the game the Wolverines went 80-yards topped off by a 3-yard touch down run by Azaula and a 33-24 well earned victory by the Wolverines
Offensively, Aliso was lead by their Sr. QB Zanolli 11-20-224 yards and 3 touchdown passes receiving wise. Pelichowski's 4 receptions for 110 yards and Joe Gilbuena's 3 catches for 71 led the Wolverines. For the fourth straight game, Greg Azaula rushed for over 100-yards with 21 carries for 133 yards. Defensively the Wolverines knew shutting down the county's leading rusher would be a tall order and hoped only to contain him and keep the Mustang offense out of the end-zone as much as possible. When it was all said and done, the Aliso defense came up big when needed most and turned away the Mustangs with the game on the line. Once again on defense the Wolverines where led by DB's Sr. Tyler Zanolli and Jr. Davison Dumas whom both came up with big interceptions to stall Mustang drives. Strong play when needed, most helped the defense do their part and put a “W” on the board for Aliso. In next weeks tussle, the Wolverines hit the road for the first time this year and travel south to meet their next-door neighbor, The Dana Hills Dolphins, in a rematch of a good old neighbor hood brawl with bragging rights on the line. |
Aliso Niguel pulls away Saturday, October 1, 2005
By KEN HILL - OC Register - Special to the Register
ALISO NIGUEL – Trabuco Hills running back P.J. Vallier, Orange County's leading rusher, might have been the featured player going into Friday night's game against Aliso Niguel, but Wolverines quarterback Tyler Zanolli stole the show. Zanolli passed for 224 yards and three touchdowns to lead 11th-ranked Aliso Niguel (4-0) to a 33-24 victory over the 16th-ranked Mustangs (2-2) at Wolverine Stadium. Vallier, who came into the game with 710 yards in three games, did little to disappoint the overflow crowd, running for 233 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries, but Zanolli, who escaped trouble time and again with wild scrambles, connected on eight third-and-long plays to frustrate the Mustangs most of the evening.
Aliso Niguel got on the board first, using a 32-yard run on a fake punt by up man Aaron Long, to set up the Wolverines at the Mustangs 9. On the next play, Greg Azaula ran in to make it 7-0. After a 41-yard field goal by Trabuco Hills kicker Shane Shelton, Aliso Niguel struck again, driving 80 yards in seven plays, with Zanolli connecting with Long on a 14-yard scoring toss and a 13-3 advantage, midway through the second quarter. Trabuco Hills came right back and scored on its next possession on a 1-yard plunge by Vallier to make it 13-10. But Zanolli worked his third-down magic late in the half, hitting Brian Pelichowski on a 42-yard scoring play and a 20-10 halftime lead. Aliso Niguel iced the game, going 80 yards in eight plays, with three more third-down conversions and a 3-yard TD run by Azaula to make it 33-24 with 3:59 remaining. Wolverines Predator defense controls game. September 23, 2005
Aliso now 3-0-0 after dominating Capo Valley 23-0. On a night that saw two inter-district rival meet on COX 3 game of the week, the Aliso Niguel Wolverines were determined to make it a star-studded performance for the television audience. On paper is looked to be an offensive show for both team, but with turnovers and penalties early in the first quarter both teams look to their defense to show the way. The scoring began with an Eric Carr 24-yard field goal to make the score 3-0 Wolverines. Not until the second quarter was the first touchdown of the game scored after a short punt from Capo Valley Aliso took the ball at the Cougar 44 yard line and went on a six play drive topped off by a Greg Azaula 6-yard touchdown run to make the score 10-0. Later in the quarter Eric Carr again converted another field goal of 28-yards which increased the Aliso lead to 13-0 going into halftime.
The Wolverines 3rd Quarter score came after a bad snap on a Cougar punt attempt which handed the Wolverines the ball in the Capo red zone on the 19-yard line, from there the Wolverines needed only two plays to take advantage of the miscue when Azaula scampered 16-yards for the touchdown and an 20-0 lead. The final score of the night came on a mammoth 44-yard field goal by Carr to finish off the Cougars 23-0. Defensively the Wolverines where as strong as ever not allowing the Cougars to cross mid field but only once in the first half and only allowed 91 yards of total offense to what looked to be a high powered Cougar offense. The Wolverine predator defense also forced four turnovers on the night. All night long the swarming Aliso defense would not allow Capo to get any type of rhythm, which caused CapoValley into a lot of 4 and out and punt situations. The entire Wolverine defense shined on Friday night behind Sr. leaders in the secondary Tyler Zanolli who had an interception, Dez Ralston and Cory Seltenreich. The D-line and Line backing corp. lead by Sr. Alex Yoon, Pete Sewell, Nick Young and Zack Bosco kept the Cougars on their heels all night long. Offensive stars included the entire Wolverine O-line lead by Sr. Pat Calahan, George Hessler and Chris Lapidus that opened up monster holes that allowed Tail Back. Greg Azaula to rush for his third consecutive 100-yard game Azaula rushed for 123 yards on 20 carries on the night. This week's match up is against another tuff rushing team in Trabuco Hills (2-1-0) and third South Coast league Div II team the Wolverines have faced this year. Look for both teams to pound it out on the ground in a battle of two of the top rushing teams in Orange County. |
Wolverines 'D' decisive
By KEN HILL - Saturday, September 24, 2005
Special to the Register
ALISO VIEJO – After an impressive offensive performance last week, Aliso Niguel decided to let the defense stand out this week. The Wolverines defense forced four turnovers and held Capistrano Valley to 91 yards in total offense in a 23-0 nonleague victory over the Cougars on Friday at Aliso Niguel High. The Wolverines (3-0) sputtered on offense in the first half, but the defense dominated the first half, allowing the Cougars (1-2) to cross midfield for one play. Aliso Niguel kicker Eric Carr provided a 24-yard field goal in the first quarter to open the scoring. The Wolverines scored their first touchdown in the second quarter, taking advantage of a short punt and driving 44 yards in six plays, with tailback Greg Azaula going in from 6 yards out. Carr finished the first-half scoring with a 28-yard field goal to make it 13-0. Aliso Niguel's defense held the Cougars to 20 yards on 25 plays in the first half. The Wolverines took advantage of a bad snap on a punt in the third quarter and took over at the Cougars 19-yard line. Two plays later Azaula ran in from 16 yards to make it 20-0. Carr added his third field goal, this one from 44 yards out midway through the fourth quarter, to end the Wolverines scoring.

Aliso Wins behind a strong running game and tough defense - September 16, 2005
Wolverines beat Pioneers 22-13 to move to 2-0-0. Week number two saw the Wolverines continue on their winning ways with a tough fought win against a very athletic and quick Artesia Pioneer team. The Wolverines scored first when Tyler Zanolli connected with Joe Gilbuena on a leaping highlight reel catch in the corner of the end zone to make the score 7-0 after Eric Carr's extra point. In the second quarter the Wolverines drove the ball down to the seven-yard line where Sr. Quarter back Tyler Zanolli scrambled left and keep the ball for the seven-yard touchdown, the extra point was blocked and Aliso had a 13-0 lead. Artesia scored later in the quarter to cut the lead to 13-7 before Eric Carr converted a 39-yard field goal to lead the Wolverines into the locker room at half time with a 16-7 lead.
The second half was dominated by both defenses and the lone score by the Wolverines came when Jr. running back Greg Azaula scampered 16 yards for the touch down, the point after two point try failed and Aliso lead 22-7. Artesia ended the scoring when they recovered a fumble late in the game and returned it for the final score of the night and a 22-13 Wolverine victory. Defensively the Wolverines where lead by Down lineman Zack Bosco and Chris Herber, Linebacker Robert Mealin and Corner Eric Carr who also had an interception early in the game that lead to the Wolverines first score. Once again the running game continued to shine with a huge game by Greg Azaula 19 carries-229 yards 1 touch down and Jay Chang 9 carries –80 yards. Receiving leaders where Derek Currier with 2 receptions for 21 yards and Joe Gilbuena with a 10 yard touch down reception. This weeks game against inter district rival Capistrano Valley Cougars (1-1-0) will be the Wolverines (2-0-0) toughest challenge so far on this young season. Both teams always play each other tuff and look to shine in a game that will be televised on COX channel 3. |
Azaula carries Aliso Niguel By CHRIS TOBOLSKI - The Orange County Register - Saturday, September 17, 2005
ALISO VIEJO – During pre game warm-ups, Aliso Niguel's Greg Azaula said he was feeling good, eager to get the ball.On the strength of the running back's 19-carry, 229-yard performance, the Wolverines cruised to a 22-13 victory over Artesia of Lakewood (1-1) on Friday night at Aliso Niguel High."I was in the mood to play some football," said Azaula, whose 16-yard touchdown run gave Aliso Niguel a 22-7 lead in the third quarter. "The line was getting good blocks, and I made a few good cuts." Aliso Niguel (2-0) jumped to a 13-0 lead before the Pioneers scored. Wolverines win opener over Chargers
BY LAURA MARIN, SPORTS WRITER, Aliso Viejo Local News - September15, 2005
The theme of the night was penalties, as Aliso Niguel Wolverines swam through a sea yellow flags to beat the El Toro Chargers (24-7), in their nonleague home opener. It was game of who would make the most out of mistakes. And the Chargers (0-1) struck first. They took advantage of a Wolverine (1-0) fumble at their own four-yard line, on the game's opening kickoff. A play later, the Charger's senior running back, Patrick Wellman ran it in for a touchdown. But those were the only points that El Toro would score. Though the Chargers kept the game close for three quarters, a comedy of errors on defense and problems with communication hindered their performance. “Our defense made some errors, but I felt that our guys played hard,” first year Chargers head coach Jake Haley said of his team. After exchanging close to 15 penalties in the first half, both teams settled down. That's when the home team took charge on both sides of the field. Aliso Niguel's junior running back, Greg Azaula of Laguna Niguel, rushed for 105 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to tie the game, 7-7. Senior kicker Eric Carr put up three points of his own to break the tie, ending the half at 10-7. After a scoreless third quarter, starting senior quarterback Tyler Zanolli threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver, Brian Pelichowski of Aliso Viejo, to go up 17-10 with eight minutes left in the game. Zanolli still had one more touchdown throw in him and with 1:05 left on the clock, he connected with junior tight end Aaron Long of Laguna Niguel for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Zanolli completed 6 of 17 passes for 151 yards and no interceptions. “I was proud the way that my guys came back from adversity,” first year Wolverines head coach Jeff Meeder said of his team. When asked if he was concerned about the number of unnecessary errors in the game, Coach Meeder said he doesn't think so. “The penalty issue is not a big thing ... we have a young team and we will continue to work with them.” Copyright 2005 The Orange County Register - Local News

Aliso opens with victory over El Toro - September 9, 2005
The Wolverines overcome the Chargers and penalties to start season 1-0-0. In the his first game as Aliso Niguel Head football coach Jeff Veeder did not have much time relax before the Wolverines had fumbled the opening kickoff and gave El Toro the Ball on Aliso's 10 yard line. Two plays after recovering the fumble the Chargers were in the end zone and on the scoreboard with a 7-0 lead and only seconds off the clock. The Wolverines then took the field on offense and went on a 75 yard drive that was topped off by a 18 yard touchdown run by Greg Azaula to even the score at 7-7. The Aliso defense then came up big and shut down the Chargers for the remainder of the half. It's sloppy, but Aliso Niguel wins By MIGUEL A. MELENDEZ
The Orange County Register, Saturday, September 10, 2005
A barrage of yellow flags dominated the game, but Aliso Niguel overcame an early deficit to defeat visiting El Toro, 24-7, in a nonleague game Friday. There were at least 20 penalties in the season opener for both schools. On the opening kickoff the Wolverines (1-0) fumbled at their own 15-yard line. Two plays later the Chargers (0-1) scored on a 4-yard run by Patrick Wellman. "We were down 7-0 before we knew what was going on, but our defense stepped it up and shut them down the rest of the way," Aliso Niguel coach Jeff Veeder said. Wolverines quarterback Tyler Zanolli completed 6 of 17 attempts for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Pelichowski caught a 48-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter. Teammate Aaron Long capped the scoring with a 21-yard reception. Greg Azaula led the Aliso Niguel rushing attack with 105 yards on 17 carries, including an 18-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. "As a first-year head coach you don't want your first call to be goal line, but we were able to overcome those obstacles," Veeder said. The Aliso Niguel defense played a big part in the victory as it recorded five sacks, two from Justin Shin. The Chargers' running and passing game was virtually nonexistent after the first and only score. Wellman rushed for 54 yards on 14 carries. Quarterback Kyle Manning completed 2 of 18 attempts and one interception for El Toro.
